Parenting

Raising a happy, healthy child is one of the most challenging jobs a parent can have and certainly one of the most rewarding.

While no parent is perfect, all parents (including myself) can work or improve our parenting styles, as we are our children’s main role model/s from the time they are born.

The following 10 principles are a guide for anyone who is blessed to have children in their lives, from parents, grandparents, step-parents, extended family and friends right though to educators.

What you do matters.

You cannot be too loving.

Be involved in your child's life.

Adapt to fit your parenting child.

Establish/set boundaries/rules.

Foster your child's independence.

Be consistent.

Avoid harsh discipline.

Explain your rules and decisions.

Treat your child with respect.

What Is Your Parenting Style?

The 4 Parenting Styles

Permissive

  • Child-driven

  • Rarely gives or enforces rules

  • Overindulges child to avoid conflict

Neglectful

  • Uninvolved or absent

  • Provides little nurturance or guidance

  • Indifferent to child's social-emotional and behavioural needs

Authoritative

  • Solves problems together with child/children

  • Sets clear rules and expectations

  • Open to communication and natural consequences

Authoritarian

  • Parent-driven

  • One-way communication, with little consideration of child's social-emotional and behavioural needs
